HIV vaccine trial in South Africa

i dont know about you but this trial bothers me. why do Africans have to be the guinea pigs? im not sure why Merck could not test the vaccine in America or China. it bothers me for two reasons. first, i feel like it will promote risky behavior. second, remember the recently canceled study for the hiv microbicidal gel in which 30 of the 1300 participants were infected with the virus.

i understand the importance of human testing. but i am concerned that some of the participants are not fully aware of the risks involved. i personally would be unwilling to participate in such a study, the risks are too high.

Just like in war, the sacrifices of a few save the lives of many. there is a war against HIV/AIDS and whatever arsenal is at the disposal of the proponents should be used to that end. In any case, it is already well known that people are having unprotected sex. Whether or not people are in study will not influence the decision to have unprotected sex or not. I am sure they are also counseled before taking the test, so they should know the consequences. I just think that Merck will take the advantage that South Africans are less likely to sue in case they are infected than Americans are. The health ministry in South African should make sure that these people are not exploited.
